It's What's Underneath That Counts

Posted on April 14, 2017 at 9:55 PM

Shopping for bras and panties is the last thing I want to spend my saturday morning (or any day) doing. Yes, I can walk up to the sales lady in a lingerie department and ask her for her help, but then I have to ask, "Does she really know what she's doing?" Quality undergarments are expensive and I want to make sure I'm spending my money (and my time) on the best that's available.

I'm more familiar with what's in shops and department stores today. We’re very fortunate we no longer have to wear garments of torture to achieve a perfect shape, or smoother lines! Gone are the days of " no pain, no gain", and now you can experience the benefits of shape-refining underwear without the discomfort!

Incorporating the right underwear into your wardrobe will make an amazing difference to how you look and feel in your clothes. It's best to purchase bras and underwear for your body type. In this post, I share what works best for different body types: Triangle, Inverted Triangle, Round, Rectangle, and Hourglass.

If you're not sure what your unique body type is, I've got you covered. In my Wear Your Brilliance in 4 Weeks Style Program, I either take your measurements (if done in person) or you send me your measurements via email (if virtual) and in return, you'll get lifetime tools on not only what your body type is, but what styles and shapes fit and flatter you best.

Triangles

  • Bra's that are shape-creating and are of smooth fabric are really essential for a triangle (a t-shirt bra, padded or unpadded is ideal) as these can be worn under almost anything and can often feature multi-way straps and come in the essential white, nude, black, which are of course the basics in our underwear drawer.

Voted best T-Shirt Bra by Oprah and my absolute favorite and must-have bra for my triangle-shaped sisters is the Le Mystere Women's Dream Tisha bra. This bra is simply amazing! The Dream Tisha bra has a youthful yet sexy look while still providing full coverage and exceptional support. It gives a nice, smooth line under clothes and is very comfortable to wear for long periods of time.

If you're triangle shaped, be sure to add this to your collection.

  • A shapely bra with a seamless moulded cup is always essential to bring balance to the triangular figure. They are brilliant for both smaller and larger busts. For this type of bra, consider the Safari bra, also by Le Mystere. The Safari bra provides provides excellent support through the band, but still is sexy with nicely patterned material.

Control Panties - light, medium or firm - as a fuller bottom will always look better when slightly supported and not too wobbly! Look for seamless or VPL's (no visible panty line). I like Maidenform Flexees Women's Shapewear Brief Firm Control. These underwears hold everything in place and give you ultimate control. No more lumps and bumps under your fitted dresses!

Inverted Triangles

To make the most of a small bust, try a balcony style bra, ideally with padding, Demi-cup bras, and bras that bring shape and fullness to the bust; gel filled push-ups are fantastic. This can give an enhanced neckline, excellent uplift, and a lovely, curvy shape.

  • Take care to avoid visible panty lines as we want to focus the attention on the lower body of an Inverted Triangle -- if thongs are not the style of choice, try low-rise, seamless shorts.

  • A larger bust needs wider shoulder straps and back straps to give firm support with full cups to give a better appearance. The Le Mystere bras are an awesome collection to have in your wardrobe!

Next week, I'll highlight the right underwear and supporting garments for the Rectangle, Round, and Hour-glass shape. Stay tuned!

Not sure what your body type is? That's ok. I go over all of this and more in my Wear Your Brilliance in 4 Weeks Style Program. In 4 weeks, you'll learn what colors, styles and shapes fit and flatter you best. No need to play the guessing game any more. Click here to learn more.
